I’m self employed so something I’m constantly working on is how to be more productive with my work. When you’re self employed you can basically choose your own schedule, which is both a blessing and a curse. Early on when I first started working for myself I would drag my work out over the course of the day just because it was easier, but I ended up feeling exhausted because I was taking two or three times as long as I should be for projects. Whether you’re self employed, a business owner, or working in a traditional job here are three tips for being more productive at work:
1. Lock in Rest Times
Have you ever tried to work 8 hours straight without a break? It’s absolutely exhausting and over the long term can do terrible things for your health. I’m sure you’ve seen the news articles on students and interns who have literally worked themselves to death. I personally like to follow a regular schedule for breaks – while you think taking time out to rest or relax your brain might reduce productivity, I’ve personally found the complete opposite to be true. I do a 50 minute “on” and 10 minute “off” schedule, with larger breaks after 3 cycles, the first being lunch and the second being an afternoon tea break. You can even find apps on your phone that help you do this method – commonly referred to as the Pomodoro timer method. Most apps will let you play around with the time intervals so you can find the one that works best for you. 2. Focus on Your Why
Why are you focusing on this project? What benefit will it bring to your work? Sometimes we take on tasks without really considering the benefits or how they’ll impact the rest of our work. I personally like to spend a minute thinking about why I’m doing each task and what it will bring to my business. I also spend some time each day thinking on my big why – why I’m working hard, why I’m trying to transform my income and what my long term goals are. This helps me feel more motivated and focused and helps me get through boring work days without too much resistance. 3. Find a Good Balance in Life
I feel like you need to find a good balance in your life to be productive and satisfied. Too much work and you’ll go crazy, but also if you’re avoiding work or your studies and focusing too much on the fun stuff, eventually that will start to bother you as well. Finding a good balance between the two is important for feeling balanced overall. When your life is more balanced, you’ll find that your energy levels sky rocket and your mood will improve greatly.
