Did you decide that 2018 was the year you were finally going to get your health sorted this year? Maybe you were going to get your sleeping sorted, lose 10 pounds, or finally start working out? Now that we’re almost halfway through the year, it’s a good idea to look at the goals you set at the beginning of the year and determine whether you’re achieving these goals.
If you haven’t set your goals, or you’re not quite sure where to start, here are some top ways you can improve your health this year:
Watch your diet
Ever heard the saying “abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym?” Unfortunately it’s true, and you simply can’t out-exercise a bad diet. That’s why it’s a good idea to make sure you’re eating the right amount of calories if you’re hoping to lose weight. One good way to do this is to use the IIFYM approach.
This is about eating the right amount of calories and the right amount of macronutrients based on your body type, exercise level, and goals. You may also want to consider your micronutrients. Use amino acids to improve health, and make sure you’re getting enough vitamins from your food.
Get active
Exercise is hugely important if you’re hoping to improve your health. Not only should you be doing cardio to keep yourself fit, but you should also consider strength training. This will help you build muscle so you’ll have definition as you lose weight and will avoid that skinny-fat look. Strength training is also important for overall health- particularly for women since it can help prevent osteoporosis.
Work on your sleep
I don’t know about you, but I find myself tired a lot of the time, only to spend my nights tossing and turning and thinking about all the things I need to do the next day. One of the best things you can do to improve your sleep is to stop using screens in the bedroom. I like to put my phone on airplane mode around an hour before I sleep so I won’t be looking at that blue light. Consistency is hugely important, and I find that going to sleep at the same time each night makes a massive difference in my ability to get out of bed the next morning.
