One of the most important talking points in US politics over the last few years has been America’s stand on border control, especially when it comes to the US-Mexico border. Trump, of course, infamously planned to build a wall across the entire southern line of America to stop immigrants from entering the country, but there were many reports that human rights violations were taking place in the process.
As of 2021, Trump is now out of the picture, and Biden has taken the helm, so where does he stand when it comes to border control, and what changes are planned to take place? In other words, which direction is the US going to go? Let’s find out.
So, Where Are We At?
It’s being stated that the border situation is still in a crisis mode, more than it’s been in a long time. Biden, of course, has adopted more of an open border policy that allows people to enter the country in several different ways, but this seems to have allowed illegally migrating children (minors) to enter the country, and now the southern states are being ‘flooded’.
As Lawalways states, the minors are being housed in federally-run shelters that look after them, but these are apparently costing over $60 million per week. With more and more people crossing the borders each and every day and thousands more people being allowed to stay in the country, it’s no surprise that many people are worried about how things are going to turn out.
What’s more, Biden plans to spend around $861 million on foreign aid that will go directly to Central American countries, like Mexico, which is also causing a stir since the previous figures were much lower, like $560 million in 2017 and $462 million in 2018. When US citizens would perhaps rather have this money spent on improving their lives and services, you can see why people are getting angry.
Can Biden Fix It?
You can’t blame Biden for trying.
In an ideal world, you would want people to be able to travel freely across borders without it harming or impeding the lives of others, especially if those people are having a rough time in their countries and need some support. After all, Central Americans are such an important part of modern-day American culture since they fulfil jobs that need to be completed and work to provide income and circulate more money into the US system.
Summary
It seems that we are far from being in that ideal world, especially when hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent so frivolously. As we head into 2022, it will be interesting to watch this space and see what changes are made.
Of course, from a political standpoint, Biden blames Trump for creating such a bad border situation in the first place, and Trump blames Biden, and with the media hyping up everything from all sides, it’s hard to know the facts of the matter and what the best solution to this problem is.
